The plot thickens...

Image
Last week I was talking about how a new chapter brings with it new ideas, and in similar context my update this week sees another chapter come to an end and an intriguing twist to the story of Belus. The plot thickens... I have often said that I'm never sure where my writing will lead me. I start with an idea, a premise, that I think takes me from point A, to point B. The trouble is when your imagination gets to work by the time you finish writing you end up at an unknown destination, a mystery point C. So it was when I wrote Dragon King and similarly, Olgrun. The fact that each time I write I potentially end up somewhere I didn't expect has always been a good thing. Even I don't know how my stories will end. I have a very broad brush thread and allow my imagination to take over the driving seat, the results often lead to a more thrilling story, a thickening plot and plenty of mystery to keep the reader wanting more. This week I've introduced something new, something th

New chapter brings new ideas

This week has been one of those weeks where I knew I needed something fresh to write. I've covered a considerable backstory with this third novel and have concentrated a significant amount on a few characters that were essential to the rest of the book. It was time to get back to our main protagonist, Belus. The trouble was I was starting a new chapter and really needed some inspiration... When I did sit to write I promised myself I'd try to get 500 words down, to get the ball rolling, so to speak. After that I'd do another sitting later in the week in order to achieve my minimum weekly 1000 word target. So I sat and I began to write the first few sentences. These words set the scene and somehow got me into an unusual meditative state. It was as if I was a third party witnessing the events as they happened. I watched as Belus and his wife made their way to a special place, meeting with a new character who I paid particular attention to. The conversation between the three of

Taking the pressure off writing...

Hello everyone, another weekend, another update. This week has been slow but steady, my minimum target of 1000 words per week was achieved, but only just. Sometimes I need to remind myself that there is no pressure to get this done, other than to do my little slice of writing each week. I suspect my blog entries double my workload, but somehow this is far easier, it's not much different to speaking out loud, I'm merely transcribing my internal podcast and making it available to the world.  I had always said that I would sit to write at least twice per week and ensure that each sitting surpassed 500 words. I've decided to modify that slightly, if I only sit down and write once, or if I choose to write three times in a week it doesn't really matter, so long as I hit the 1000 word target. I've done this to take the pressure off a little more. To allow more flexibility and hopefully to stop worrying about things too much. It's not as if I'm an author of any sign

Writers block, or something else?

Hello everyone, and welcome back to my weekly update. I've finally begun to write Belus once more, this follows a long period without working on the novel as I concentrated on making Dragon King and Olgrun available for sale on Amazon and via the ubiquitous Kindle app. Just search for, The Chronicles of Niru. It's been nearly a week since refreshing myself on what I'd written so far and asking the question, what next? I knew not to rush into things, to let the possibilities sit and ferment for a while. To give things time to develop. I decided to make the effort to simply think about the novel for a few minutes a day, to stimulate my imagination and kickstart a thought process that had been dormant for a while. By Friday, nearly a week later, things were as they should be, I had a premise to work from. When I sat to write, I expected to produce 500 words or perhaps a little more, so I was pleasantly shocked at how easily I surpassed my rather paltry target. I stopped writin

Forward ~ Dragon King

Forward, from the Dragon King... I first began to type this story some eight years ago. It was a friend who once said that with my vivid imagination I should write a book, I guess that statement lodged itself in my head and so one day I decided I’d give it a go. I had no idea what would happen, whether it would be successful or not and only had a tiny premise, a mere twinkling of an idea that would form the basis of what was to be called, The White Dagger Of Albathon. Since then this little novel has been revised many times and now bears the title, Dragon King. The story was initially self published in 2017 and despite a long period without any sales I decided that I hadn’t yet finished what I wanted to say. I’d created a world full of amazing things, characters were born and it was clear to me, at least, that I was far from done. I decided to tell my stories regardless of fame or fortune, to simply write for the reward of seeing my imagination come to life; I was doing it for myself.

Back up to speed

Welcome to the weekly update. This is the first official one since creating this new blog. For those that have followed along with my weekly progress via my Facebook page in the past, I'd just like to let you know (and everyone else) that updates, from now on, may be posted either Saturday or Sunday. I had been sticking rigidly to updating on a Sunday. However, this way I get more flexibility as I can't always determine what I'm doing at the weekend, so it's good for me.  It's going to be good for blog followers too, as I've no longer got an excuse for making very short posts due to time pressures, or just being too tired, etc. Last week I finally got up to speed refreshing myself with the story of Belus. It's been a couple of months at least since I last looked at the manuscript because, as most of you know, I'd been preparing Dragon King and Olgrun ready for sale. This involved editing, more editing, and more editing, before the huge faff I had of ge
